Virginia Festival of the Book 2025: Celebrate the Art of Marbling with Brittani Locke

The University of Virginia’s Virginia Center for the Book invites creatives and book lovers to two immersive events this spring. The Soft Asylum will be participating with an Artist Talk and a Marbling Workshop led by acclaimed surface designer Brittani Locke. Part of the Virginia Festival of the Book, these programs blend centuries-old craftsmanship with modern flair—and you’re invited to join the magic!

Paper Marbling w/Brittani Locke 

Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM During this free artist talk, Locke will explore marbling’s rich history, from ornate book endpapers to wearable fabrics and fore-edge designs. A master of her craft, Locke’s work has graced private collections and publishers alike. Discover how she bridges tradition and innovation, drawing inspiration from fashion and global techniques. Don’t miss this sneak peek before her May workshop!

Introduction to Marbled Paper Workshop 

May 24–25, 2025 (10:00 AM–4:00 PM daily) Dive deeper at this hands-on workshop. Over two days, create your own vibrant papers using traditional combs and acrylic paint. Beginners and seasoned artists alike will revel in mastering traditional patterns, while learning marbling’s cross-cultural roots. With a class capped at eight, personalized guidance is guaranteed. Fees start at $265 (members) and include materials.

Both events are hosted at the Virginia Center for the Book (Jefferson School City Center). Register early for the workshop—spots close May 16!
