Our lambda carrageenan is free from common fillers used by some suppliers, like dextrose. I found that the prints are more vivid, and the bath stays useable for much longer (up to 5 days without refrigeration in my experience).
Since the paints and water used will vary, I have put together mixing instructions which you can use to determine your own perfect mixing ratio. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or need help troubleshooting.
Materials Needed:
- Pure carrageenan powder
- Clean, room-temperature distilled water
- Measuring spoon (tablespoon)
- Blender (preferred) or mixing bowl with a whisk
- Small testing bath (e.g., a shallow dish)
- Your preferred paint
Step 1: Prepare the Base Solution
Starting Ratio: Use 1 tablespoon of carrageenan powder per 1 liter of distilled water.
Add the carrageenan into the distilled water while stirring vigorously with a whisk or mix in a blender for 60 seconds.
Ensure no clumps remain. The mixture will thicken slightly as it hydrates.
Step 2: Rest the Mixture (optional)
Let the solution sit covered for 12–24 hours at room temperature to fully activate. This step will also eliminate most of the air bubbles which form during the mixing stage.
Step 3: Test in a Small Bath
Pour a small amount of the prepared solution into a shallow dish (e.g., a plate or tray).
Check paint behavior:
Drop marbling paints onto the surface. They should float and spread easily without sinking.
If paints sink or break apart, the mixture is too thin.
Step 4: Adjust Consistency (If Needed)
Too thin? Add more carrageenan:
Mix ¼ tablespoon of carrageenan into 250ml of the existing solution. Stir thoroughly, rest for 1–2 hours, then retest.
Too thick? Dilute with distilled water:
Add 1–2 tablespoons of distilled water at a time to the small bath, stir gently, and retest.
Repeat adjustments until paints float properly.
Step 5: Store for Longevity
Transfer the unused solution to a sealed container and refrigerate.
Discard if you notice mold, odor, or cloudiness.

Stir the refrigerated solution gently before reusing, as it may thicken over time.
